The Challenge
During the production and exploration of oil, many different wastes are generated, which include drilling fluid, petroleum wastewater, sludge from oil refineries and sludge from storage tanks.
Oil sludge is a mixture of solid particles of different origins together with a liquid phase consisting mainly of hydrocarbons. Examples include sediments on the bottom of the tank and other storage facilities or solid wastes during oil extraction.
Oil sludge is separated as hazardous waste and it may contain several toxic compounds. It is a common problem leading to corrosion, reduction of equipment capacity and in case of leakage and contamination in the environment to serious ecological problems.
Accidents of oil tankers near the coast are particularly serious, which, in addition to contamination of the water, leads to contamination of the coast.
Our Solution
The BlowDec® technology was originally built to process, treat and recycle the oil sludge. Our technology is using the unique properties of the reactor to separate oil sludge into its original state of clean waste oil, water, soil or sand without hydrocarbons. By doing so, the oil from the oil sludge is able to be used again.
The significant advantage of our technology is its effectiveness. Nearly 100% of hydrocarbons from the waste oil sludge are recovered when processed. The quality and properties of the recycled oil from the oil sludge depend on the properties of the waste oil used and are typically even better than the original oil thanks to the simultaneous upgrading process of our technology.
During the processing of oil sludge, a very finely ground inorganic solid component is produced as a by-product. This product can be used for example to replace an important component in the production of road asphalt - the so-called filler. Currently, finely ground limestone is used for this purpose.
